Located at the heart of the University of Galway campus, the Human Biology Building was developed as a major new teaching and research facility for the University’s School of Medicine. Designed by Scott Tallon Walker Architects and constructed by BAM Ireland, the five-storey, 8,200 m² building brings together the disciplines of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics within a single integrated environment.
Completed as part of the University’s wider investment in biomedical research and medical education, the facility provides a combination of undergraduate teaching laboratories, specialist research laboratories, anatomy and mortuary facilities, lecture theatres, write-up spaces and academic support areas. The building was designed to support both day-to-day teaching and advanced scientific research within a modern research-led environment.
SB Laboratories manufactured and installed specialist laboratory furniture and fume cupboards across multiple floors of the Human Biology Building, helping to create a series of contemporary teaching and research environments tailored to the demands of modern medical education and biomedical science.
Working across teaching laboratories, preparation spaces and specialist research areas, the installation was designed to support both day-to-day practical teaching and advanced scientific investigation within a highly serviced university environment.
The furniture package incorporated Utilaire laboratory furniture systems, Balance benches, Ecoline fume cupboards, sink benches and SpaceSaver storage systems, providing durable, functional laboratory environments suited to a wide range of scientific disciplines and teaching requirements.
Bringing together Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics within a single purpose-designed facility, the building plays an important role in supporting both undergraduate teaching and postgraduate biomedical research at the University.
The SB Labs manufacturing plant, showrooms and offices are always open for viewing and a member of staff would be happy to provide a guided tour at any time.
