The Cancer Research Laboratories within the Western Gateway Building at University College Cork form part of a strategically important translational research hub developed to support advanced biomedical and cancer research collaboration in Ireland.

Designed as a 1,600m² purpose-built facility, the complex brings together specialist laboratories, core scientific facilities and collaborative academic spaces within a multidisciplinary environment focused on cancer and biomedical science. Departments co-located within the building include Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Public Health and Biochemistry, creating a connected scientific environment designed to encourage collaboration, support future growth and strengthen translational research activity between laboratory investigation and clinical application.

The wider facility incorporates specialist core laboratories for histopathology, flow cytometry and fluorescent microscopy, supporting advanced tissue analysis, cellular investigation and biomedical discovery. The building additionally houses the Blood Cancer Network of Ireland (BCNI) Biobank, supporting collaborative blood cancer research initiatives alongside partner institutions including Trinity College Dublin and University of Galway.

Supporting these highly specialised laboratory environments, SB Laboratories manufactured and installed laboratory furniture for a range of research and support spaces within the Cancer Research Laboratories package, working alongside main contractor Walls Construction.

The SB Laboratories installation included a large open-plan wet laboratory together with a series of dedicated specialist environments, including tissue culture laboratories, pathology and microbiology laboratories, microscopy suites, PCR rooms, HPLC and CCMS rooms, perfusion and microdialysis laboratories, freezer rooms, liquid nitrogen storage facilities, imaging laboratories, clean rooms and associated laboratory storage areas.

To accommodate the varied operational and technical requirements across the facility, SB Laboratories supplied a combination of Exemplaire, Utilaire and Pedestal laboratory furniture systems, designed to support intensive daily scientific use across multiple biomedical disciplines and laboratory processes.

The completed laboratories provide contemporary scientific infrastructure capable of supporting complex biomedical investigation, translational cancer research and long-term scientific collaboration within one of Ireland’s leading university research environments.
